Personal Development

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is a planned programme of learning opportunities and experiences that help students grow and develop as responsible individuals.  It equips students with knowledge and practical skills to live healthy, safe, fulfilled and responsible lives.  PSHE encourages students to be enterprising and supports them in making positive education and career choices.  PSHE also enables students to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes, and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.

The school's PSHE days programme has been devised to fulfil our statutory responsibility to support students' spiritual, moral, cultural, physical and personal development.  The programme supplements existing provision in Mathematics, Science, Computing, Physical Education, Religious Education, Design and Technology, and takes account of the Department for Education guidance concerning Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), preventing and tackling bullying, safeguarding and equality.

PSHE Curriculum and Programme of Study

The PSHE curriculum is based on three core themes, and planning is centred on this programme of study.

(Key objectives for each core theme can be viewed in the RSE and PSHE Policy).

  • Health and Well-being
  • Relationships and Sex Education (statutory requirement)
  • Living in the Wider World (Careers and Finance Education)

PSHE Road Maps (2024-25)

In addition to the core themes, we promote personal development by preparing students for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.  ‘The Phoenix Edge’ is a character education program which promotes the development of life skills in key attributes within Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication.

British Values & SMSC

We live in a richly diverse, multicultural and multi-faith country, and have a responsibility in promoting and encouraging a culture that upholds British Values.  At Phoenix, we aim to reflect the British Values in all that we do.  We support and nurture our students to be safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults so that they can make a positive difference to British society and the world.

The Department for Education defines British Values as:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty and mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

Developing students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural values plays a significant part in personal development.  The ability to learn, achieve and raise aspirations supports and prepares students for life in modern Britain.  We recognise that these values are in the heart of our curriculum and school ethos, therefore, SMSC is embedded into the curriculum, delivered by all subjects and in PSHE days.  We deliver an education that provides our students with opportunities to explore and develop their own;

  • Spiritual awareness
  • Personal behaviour
  • Positive attitudes
  • Understanding of their social and cultural traditions
  • Appreciation of the diversity and richness of the cultures, particularly British culture
