Relationships & Sex Education - Consultation

Relationships and Sex Education - Consultation

8th July 2021

Dear Parents/Carers,

RE: Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

You will be aware that, as part of your child’s educational experience at Phoenix we aim to support your child’s personal development. Part of the way that we do this is through a comprehensive taught programme of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). This supports our young people to develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills needed to live healthy, safe, productive and fulfilled lives and supports them to make their own decisions, both now and in the future.

From September 2021, the Department for Education is making part of this content statutory in the form of Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education. Due to Covid, schools have been given additional time to implement and to consult with parents around the curriculum that they will be using in school.

The new guidance focuses upon healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and healthy relationships. The curriculum is designed to support children to learn about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up in a modern and diverse world. It is designed to give young people information, and help them to develop skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships and to take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

All of the sessions will be age and developmentally appropriate and meets the needs of all pupils in the classroom.

This guidance will form part of our schools PSHE Education programme which is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and Governing Body.

To introduce parents to this curriculum in more detail, we would like you to review the draft policy and the statutory content of the Relationships, Sex and Health education programme. The draft policy also contains further information about parent’s rights.

We will be holding a parental drop in session in the new academic year (assuming covid restrictions will allow us to do so) to provide you with further information if you desire this.

If you would like to find out more, make any comments or provide feedback on this draft policy, please complete our survey. The closing date for feedback is Monday 19th July 2021.

Yours faithfully,

Miss A Madden
